Exceptional museum quality model locomotives for modellers, enthusiasts and collectors

Class 52 'Western' Diesel - construction now confirmed

WesternD1030

We are very excited about our new project to build a series of Masterpiece Models of the Class 52 'Western' diesel hydraulic - possibly the most iconic modernisation plan locomotive of all. To be constructed in brass and packed with detail, our plans for this model are already well advanced and our builder is most enthusiastic about the project. Quite simply, it will be the best 7mm scale ready-to-run model of a 'Western' ever produced!

Construction of these models has now been confirmed and full details will appear shortly on this website. To ensure that you are kept informed please register your interest using the form below – remember, there is no commitment at this stage.

68XX 'Grange' 4-6-0

6853 1

Churchward's 1901 grand plan for a series of standard locomotives constructed from a pool of common parts included a 4-6-0 with 5ft 8in driving wheels, a No. 1 boiler and two outside cylinders. In the event, such a locomotive did not materialise from Swindon until 1936 by which time Collett was in charge. Apart from the Collett cab, screw reverse and a number of detail modifications however, the design for the 'Grange' class was virtually pure Churchward.

The trigger for the introduction of the 'Granges' was the fact that many of the earlier 43XX moguls were becoming life-expired by the mid-1930s and the Running Department had been asking for some time for a 4-6-0 that could take over the work of many of the older 2-6-0 and 4-4-0 designs. By withdrawing 80 of the Churchward Moguls, Collett was able to re-use some of their components – such as wheels and motion – in the construction of the 'Granges'.

In essence, the 'Grange' is a 'Hall' with smaller wheels. The No. 1 boiler made the engines more powerful than the Moguls they were intended to replace but the heavier weight also placed them in the 'red' route restriction group. Although this limited their sphere of operation rather more than the 'blue' Moguls, they were still widely spread over the GW system. The 'Granges' proved to be extremely capable mixed traffic locomotives which could and did also show a good turn of speed on passenger work when required.

When new the 'Granges' were coupled to Churchward 3,500 gallon tenders, while later in life many of them received Collett 3,500 gallon, 4,000 gallon tenders or even the Hawksworth 8ft wide 4,000 gallon tender. All these tenders are available, with the option of purchasing extra tenders at £600 each if required.

The first four 'Granges' were turned out with rather plain cast iron chimneys but the later engines had a new design of copper capped chimney which became standard for the class. Frequent boiler changes at overhauls meant that some 'Granges' also appeared with the larger, taller 'Hall' Class copper capped chimneys. Later in the BR period many 'Granges' had the tall ID (improved draughting) copper capped chimney. In BR days there was frequent swapping of ID and Grange chimneys as the boilers were changed at major overhauls. In later BR years very few Granges had Hall chimneys. We are offering all the chimney types, except for the early short-lived cast iron pattern.

Another noticeable feature of Granges is the oil pipe cover on the smokebox flanks. There were two types of GWR cover and five types of BR cover. Our models have all been fitted with the correct oil cover types based on photographic evidence. As a result of this specification, changing the names of BR engines will be limited to maintain fidelity.

Apart from Scaleseven or Finescale 0 gauge, the only other option now will be a choice of tenders.

We built 60 'Granges' in 6 liveries: GW green with the shirtbutton monogram; GW green with G W R; GW black with G W R; BR lined black with lion-over-wheel emblem (1949-53) 6809 and 6819 only; BR plain black with lion-over-wheel emblem (1953-56) and BR lined green with later totem (late 1956 onwards). All the BR period locomotives are fitted with smokebox door number plates and shedcode plates.

Of the 60 'Granges', 12 were made in GWR livery and 48 in BR liveries. It is not possible to swap GWR and BR engines as there are significant detail differences. As of October 2019 all the BR lined black engines and GWR engines have been sold. We still have a good choice of BR plain black and BR lined green engines available including a few Scale7 locomotives.

One 'Grange' has been finished as special model of 6880 Betton Grange (the Grange replica now being built). This will be donated to the Betton Grange Group.

As production is now complete, all the locomotives have been allocated names. It may be possible to change names and numbers (easier on BR locomotives than GWR locomotives due to the painted bufferbeam numbers) subject to fidelity to the prototype. If particular names are required we can order them from Severn Mill Nameplates, but the nameplate painting is complex and has to be carried out in Korea. There will also be a delay in delivery of such models and the change will necessitate extra working time and an extra charge.

Please note that the above are the only models now available and configurations can no longer be changed.

The vast majority of the Hall class engines ran with either the Collett 4,000 gallon or Hawksworth 4,000 gallon tenders, so we have allocated these in line with the selected livery configuration. However, several 49XX locomotives ran with Churchward and/or Collett 3,500 gallon tenders. Many Collett and Modified Halls also swapped from Collett to Hawksworth tenders and vice-versa, some doing this several times during their working lives. We may be able to offer a suitable alternative or additional tender from stock depending ong the livery selected.

Like the Granges, the Halls swapped boilers and smokeboxes on a regular basis. This meant that a given locomotive, especially the Collett Halls, could be seen at different times during its working life with a variety of chimney and oil pipe cover types. So for Collett Halls in the BR period: Hall, Grange and ID chimneys were all fitted especially in their later years. Modified Halls initially all had the Grange chimney. In later life most had ID chimneys fitted together with 3 row superheaters. In our selection of engines we have chosen chimneys and oil pipe covers as depicted for the engines in photographs of the relevant period.

All locomotives are fitted with DCC-sound decoders and are DC/DCC-sound switchable. The motor fitted is the same aerospace grade precision coreless motor as used in the 70XX Castles, 47XX, 68XX Grange, the 28XX/38XX and the Standard Class 5. This gives outstanding running performance when coupled with our totally enclosed ball-bearing helical gearbox. On the Halls we have fitted the standard version of the gearbox with the lower step down ratio suitable for a mixed traffic locomotive. We have also incorporated into the models the new technology changes pioneered in the 47XX and 68XX Grange models.

47XX 2-8-0

4702 slider

Churchward's last great masterpiece, the 47XX mixed traffic 2-8-0, is among the most iconic locomotives ever produced for the Great Western Railway. Only nine of these huge locomotives were built, primarily for fast overnight freight work, earning them the nickname 'Night Owls'.

Ironically the heyday for the class only came in the post-nationalisation years when the potential of these locomotives for use on heavy Summer Saturday passenger trains was acknowledged. In recognition of this they were turned out in fully lined BR passenger green livery.

The Masterpiece Models Edition is just 60 locomotives of nine prototypes. All models are now built and liveries are therefore fixed. Most of the models are now reserved. There is still a reasonable choice of GWR models available, but we have fewer BR lined green versions left. As of October 2019 there is only one model of 4708 available, which is in BR lined green livery. We have sold all the BR lined black models (4702 was the only locomotive so treated), but we still have a few BR plain black engines. So if you would like a 47XX model please do not wait too long as you may be disappointed. We have also made one special model of the Great Western Society's new-bulid 4709, fitted with 'pin-between' driving wheels as on the full-size replica. We are donating this model to the 4709 Group.

4700 in its initial form with a Standard No.1 boiler has not been made - all our models will have the large No.7 boiler. Outside steam pipes are fitted to all the models, together with the extended cab roof that was introduced on the class in 1927. All models are fitted with the shorter style of safety valve bonnet. The models of Nos. 4701-3 have the snifting valves mounted outside on the valve chest of the cylinders, while Nos. 4700/4/5/6/7/8 have them mounted in the standard position on the smokebox saddle above the running plate. We have pictures of 4700 with snifting valves on the cylinders in its early days, but these were soon moved to the smokebox saddle.

In the early 1930s the class began to be attached to 4,000 gallon tenders. We did have some spare Churchward 3,500 tenders but we have now run out, so for customers who want this tender it would have to be a special order which will not be available for several months as we would have to provide a tender from the 28XX build.

Six liveries were offered: GW green with GREAT WESTERN; GW Green with shirtbutton monogram; GW green with G W R lettering; BR unlined black with lion-over-wheel emblem; BR lined black with the lion-over-wheel emblem (4702 only) and BR lined green with later totem. All the BR period locomotives are fitted with smokebox door number plates and shedcode plates.

If you would like an engine please contact us first by email or telephone with your requirements and we will see whether and how we can meet your needs. You can also reserve your engine using the form on the right but we cannot guarantee to provide what you request as we only have what is left in stock. It may be possible to change the identity a BR livery engine subject to authenticity, however changing GWR livery engines is more difficult as this means changing the buffer beam number.

As all the models are now produced and ready to deliver we can only take payments in full. EU Customers can enquire about paying in Euros.

Delivery by courier within the UK is free of charge, and to the EU and the rest of the world it is £60.

28XX / 38XX 2-8-0s

28XX 2

Churchward's highly capable 28XX heavy freight locomotives were the first 2-8-0s in Britain. The initial production series of 84 engines was built between 1905 and 1919 and many of the class were still at work into the 1960s. A further 83 engines were built between 1938 and 1942 with Collett cabs and other modifications.

All Masterpiece Models 28XX and 2884 (38XX) 2-8-0s are fitted with DCC-sound decoders and are DC/DCC-sound switchable. The motor is the same Aerospace grade precision coreless motor as used in the 70XX 'Castles', 47XX, 68XX 'Grange' and the 49XX 'Halls', 'Modified Halls' and the Standard Class 5. This gives outstanding running performance when coupled with our totally enclosed ball-bearing helical gearbox. On the 28XX/38XX we have fitted a special version of the gearbox with a special higher step down ratio to optimise slow speed running on these heavy duty freight locomotives. We have also incorporated the new technology changes pioneered in the 47XX and 68XX Grange models.
